About author.directory

Every tool a self-published author needs.

Self-publishing now touches dozens of crafts — drafting, editing, cover design, formatting, ARC reviews, ads, audiobooks, distribution. The tools are out there, but they’re scattered across blog posts and Facebook threads. This is one calm, organized place to find them, compare what they cost, and move on with your day.

What is author.directory?

A hand-organized directory of 266 tools across 30 categories that self-published authors use to write, edit, design, publish, and market their books. The goal is one clean place to find the right tool instead of scattered blog lists.

How are tools chosen?

We start from a broad survey of the self-publishing landscape and keep the list curated — real tools authors actually use, organized so they’re easy to compare. Anyone can suggest additions through the submit form, and we review each by hand.

Does it cost anything to be listed?

No. Listings are free. Some outbound links may be affiliate links in the future, but that never decides whether a tool is included or where it ranks in a category.

Is the pricing accurate?

Pricing and links are checked periodically and carry a “last checked” date on each tool’s page. Software pricing — especially AI tools — changes often, so always confirm the current details on the tool’s own site before buying.

A note on AI tools

Several listed tools generate text, narration, or cover art with AI. Amazon KDP and some retailers require you to disclose AI-generated content when you publish, and a few awards restrict it. Check each platform’s current policy before you rely on an AI tool.

Spotted something missing?

The directory stays definitive because authors keep it honest.
